Position Summary

Based out of New Glasgow or Halifax, NS the Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing and leading a group of property accountants and providing financial management of a portfolio of commercial real estate properties. Additional duties of the Senior Accountant include but are not limited to:

  • Lead a team the preparation of monthly/quarterly financial statements, management reports and working papers in support of quarterly and annual regulatory filings and annual audit.
  • Ensures cash flows, variances and NOI summaries are delivered in accordance with reporting deadlines.
  • Assists in the preparation of consolidated financial statements and MD&A.
  • Facilitates accounting transition for acquisitions and dispositions by preparing budgets, year-end billings for dispositions and providing sound financial information to Corporate Development team.
  • Working paper preparation and review in support of annual audit.
  • Assists in process improvement initiatives and maintaining an effective system of internal control.
  • Timely delivery of tenant statements in accordance with project deadlines and assisting with technical accounting support as required.
  • Maintains oversight of straight line rent balances for assigned region to ensure accurate straight line rent calculations.
  • Conducts analysis of construction costs.
  • Reviews and approves ledgers and journal entries.
  • Assists in preparation of operating and fiscal budgets.
  • Oversight in the preparation of annual tenant recoveries.
  • Prepares internal management reports as required.
  • Maintaining excellent working relationships with operational field staff and other corporate departments.
  • Ownership of monthly property management meetings and providing accounting advice as required.
  • Engages across all levels of the organization to create and promote a safe and respectful work environment.
  • Other special projects and tasks as assigned.

The profile we are looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • At least five years’ experience in an accounting role or related position.
  • Experience in real estate as well as a CPA designation or working towards a designation are considered assets.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience is considered an asset.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing tasks.
  • Professionalism and superior communication skills.
  • The ability to build and strengthen relationships both internally and externally are required.
