Position Summary
Based out of New Glasgow or Halifax, NS, the Payroll Accountant is responsible for payroll-related accounting, compliance, G&A and reporting functions. This role works closely with Finance, People & Culture, and other departments to ensure accurate payroll financial records, provide reporting, and improve processes. Additional duties of the Payroll Accountant include but are not limited to:
- Prepares journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end reporting in collaboration with People & Culture.
- Supports general ledger (GL) reconciliation and financial audits related to payroll and G&A activities.
- Ensures compliance with federal, provincial, and local payroll regulations.
- Stays updated on legislative changes affecting payroll accounting and financial reporting.
- Assists in the preparation of payroll and G&A-related financial statements, variance tracking, and reports.
- Collaborate with Finance and People & Culture teams to ensure accurate financial reporting of payroll costs.
- Provides data-driven insights and analysis to improve payroll and G&A cost management.
- Supports G&A expense reporting, tracking, and analysis for wages and other general and administrative expenses, identifying areas for cost efficiencies and process improvements.
- Identifies and implements payroll process efficiencies and automation opportunities.
- Supports system upgrades, testing, and enhancements to payroll and related financial systems.
- Maintains accurate payroll data in accounting systems.
- Provides payroll-related guidance and training to internal stakeholders as needed.
- Engages across all levels of the organization to create and promote a safe and respectful work environment.
- Other special projects and tasks as assigned.
The profile we are looking for
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- At least three (3) years of payroll accounting experience, preferably in a commercial real estate or corporate environment.
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) or Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of payroll laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Experience with payroll accounting software and accounting systems, experience with Yardi is an asset.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem solving skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across departments.
