Position Summary

The VP, Accounting & Financial Reporting is responsible for leading, overseeing, and managing all accounting, internal and external reporting, and auditing functions for Crombie. In this role, the VP, Accounting & Financial Reporting provides technical and strategic leadership to Crombie’s Board of Trustees and senior leadership as providing technical and strategic leadership and oversight to a team of senior and junior accountants, as well as to teams providing AR and AP services.  This role is the principal liaison with the external auditing firm and Canada Revenue Agency, as well as with Sobeys and other strategic business partners. The VP, Accounting & Financial Reporting also:

  • Provides advice and direction on accounting and reporting standards for Crombie to the Board of Trustees, the leadership team, his direct reports and their teams, and colleagues across all regions.
  • Ensures all consolidated internal and external financial reports are prepared in a timely manner and are accurate and complete.
  • Ensures external reporting documents are reviewed for compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures that accounting and reporting standards are maintained at a high standard and respected by all team members. Ensures that the standards are the most appropriate for Crombie.
  • Ensures that appropriate controls are in place and the CEO-CFO certification standards are met, including assisting Sobeys internal audit and compliance program.
  • Ensures that there is alignment between the business strategy and its initiatives, and accounting and reporting standards. Provides strategic direction to senior management where applicable.
  • Continually seeks opportunities for business process improvement.
  • Ensures proper oversight and consolidation of results including Joint venture and joint operating arrangements.
  • Supports development and construction reporting.
  • Continually seeks improvements in reporting through the Financial Statements and MD&A
  • Provides leadership to ensure all related property costs are properly recorded.
  • Provides oversight and monitoring of actual results against annual budgets and prior year results.
  • Provides leadership and oversight on G&A and monitoring of department G&A costs.
  • Manages the annual fair value assessments of Crombie’s assets.
  • Ensures the accounting for all property acquisitions and dispositions is recorded accurately and on a timely basis and participate in the due diligence and statement of adjustment phases, as required.
  • Oversees the preparation of all Board documents related to accounting and financial reporting.
  • Ensures timely filing of applicable external tax documents including HST/GST/QST returns, T2 corporate returns and T3 returns.
  • Oversees the department’s talent development to ensure that each member of the team understands his or her position, where they fit into the process, and assist in their growth, development and succession planning.
  • Engages across all levels of the organization to create and promote a safe and respectful work environment.
  • Other special projects and tasks as assigned.

The profile we are looking for

Our ideal candidate has the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial reporting, preferably within the commercial real estate industry or related sector. Public Company experience considered an asset.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing large teams and complex financial operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements relevant to real estate finance and accounting.
  • Experience in financial planning, analysis, budgeting, and forecasting within a corporate environment.
  • Extensive experience with ERP systems and financial software, with a strong preference for experience in implementing or optimizing financial systems.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to drive financial strategy aligned with corporate goals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively interacting with executive leadership, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated success in leading change management initiatives and process improvements in financial operations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and influence.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with real estate development and project accounting is an asset.
